Britain’s First Megawatt e-HGV Charging Hub Goes Live

Britain Powers Ahead: First Megawatt-Scale Electric HGV Charging Hub Launches in the East Midlands

Britain has taken a major step towards a cleaner, stronger logistics future with the launch of the UK’s first megawatt-scale electric heavy goods vehicle (eHGV) charging hub at the East Midlands Gateway. The hub, delivered under the government-backed eFREIGHT 2030 programme, is set to transform freight operations and boost UK competitiveness in net zero transport.

Unveiled on 15 January at Kuehne+Nagel’s flagship logistics site, the hub is powered by British-designed Voltempo HyperCharger technology. This cutting-edge system can deliver up to one megawatt of charging power, meaning future electric trucks can recharge in less than 30 minutes and return to the road faster.

The installation features six high-power DC charging bays, all fed by a single megawatt-scale charging pod that intelligently distributes energy across vehicles. Designed to support real-world fleet needs today and into the future, this charging hub marks a breakthrough for zero-emission logistics in the UK.

This is the first of up to 35 planned megawatt charging hubs to be rolled out nationally under eFREIGHT 2030, a key part of the Government’s £200 million Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme, delivered with Innovate UK.

The site will initially support a growing fleet of twelve electric HGVs, including models from DAF and Renault Trucks, providing valuable operational data on energy use, charging patterns and performance.

This landmark deployment not only strengthens Britain’s role in clean transport innovation, but also creates jobs, attracts investment and cuts carbon emissions across the supply chain. With this milestone now live, the UK’s logistics sector is powering confidently into a greener, more efficient future.
