Avon calling! Cult British SciFi Blakes 7 is back!

Calling all sci-fi lovers Blake’s 7, the cult British space opera that captured imaginations in the late ’70s and early ’80s, is officially being revived for a modern audience.

We appreciate this story isn’t for everyone.. but if you’re a child of the 70’s and 80’s this might be BBC music (the BBC Radiophonic Workshop kind) to your ears!

The reboot is being developed by Peter Hoar, the Emmy-nominated director known for episodes of The Last of Us and Doctor Who, alongside producer Matthew Bouch and West End veteran Jason Haigh-Ellery. Together they’ve launched a genre-focused indie studio called Multitude Productions, which has secured the rights to the classic series and is preparing to pitch the new version to broadcasters and streamers – with hopes it might return to the BBC where it originally aired.

For the uninitiated, Blake’s 7 followed a ragtag crew led by Roj Blake – a rebel fighting a totalitarian regime – aboard the Liberator starship. Despite its famously low-budget production (wobbly sets and all), the show earned a devoted following thanks to its morally grey characters, political edge and gritty storytelling.

Hoar has spoken about how the original’s spirit stuck with him, noting that the charm of the early episodes came from bold ideas and character depth rather than big budgets. The new team sees an opportunity to blend that classic British sci-fi sensibility with more contemporary production values and international appeal, inspired by the success of shows such as Andor (a political Star wars for grown-ups).

That said, this kind of reboot isn’t going to excite everyone. The original show’s charm lay in its rough-around-the-edges imagination, and some fans may be wary that a sleek modern take could lose that vibe. Still, the combination of nostalgic respect and fresh ambition gives this project real potential to reignite interest in British sci-fi.

No release date or casting decisions have been announced yet, but for a series that’s been dormant for over 45 years, the spark of new life is reason enough to watch the skies especially in a new British created show!
