The BBC has today launched BBC Get Singing, an exciting new nationwide music education initiative designed to inspire collective singing among young people aged 11 to 14 across the UK. This marks the broadcaster’s most significant music education effort since the Ten Pieces programme in 2014, signalling a renewed commitment to nurturing creativity and community through song.
Hosted on the BBC Bitesize platform, Get Singing offers a free suite of engaging resources tailored for teachers, vocal leaders and young singers alike. These include curated song arrangements, video tutorials, vocal and physical warm-up exercises, written guidance notes, sheet music and backing tracks that can be used in classrooms and community settings.
At the heart of the initiative is a celebration of diverse musical voices. Grammy-winning musician, composer and producer Jacob Collier has been appointed as Get Singing ambassador and advocate. His role will help champion the programme and bring its creative vision to life, with a new arrangement of his song Something Heavy set to be released later this year as part of the growing repertoire.
Initial arrangements available at launch are performed by the renowned BBC Singers and include live more & love more by Cat Burns and Piping Down the Valleys Wild by Bob Chilcott. Over the next three years, more songs and supporting materials will be added, along with live performances, workshops for young people and continued professional development opportunities for educators and vocal leaders.
The BBC hopes this initiative will help address the decline in collective singing that can occur as children move from primary to secondary school, while also enhancing wellbeing, confidence and community spirit among participants.
BBC Get Singing represents a vibrant and inclusive step forward in music education, giving young voices new opportunities to be heard and celebrated across the United Kingdom.
