Barnsley Poised to Lead the UK as First Government-Backed Tech Town
Barnsley has been officially named the United Kingdom’s first government-backed Tech Town, marking a major step in bringing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation into everyday life across the town. The announcement, made by the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, puts Barnsley at the forefront of the UK’s efforts to harness new technology for local benefit.
As Tech Town, Barnsley will act as a national blueprint for how AI can be used to enhance public services, support local businesses and expand skills opportunities. The initiative will see tailored government backing for local schools, colleges, health services, businesses and community organisations to adopt AI tools and digital innovations that improve people’s daily experiences.
Residents can look forward to free AI and digital skills training delivered in partnership with Barnsley College and the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology, giving people of all ages the chance to build valuable expertise for the jobs of the future. Businesses will benefit from increased support through The Seam Digital Campus, which is set to expand into a dedicated AI campus, helping firms adopt new technologies, grow and create jobs locally.
In healthcare, Barnsley Hospital will pilot AI-driven tools designed to streamline patient check-ins, speed up triage and make services more efficient, while educational settings will trial safe AI learning tools that support teachers and boost pupil outcomes.
The Government will work closely with local leaders, educators, NHS professionals and community groups over the coming months to ensure the programme delivers real benefits for people across Barnsley. The town’s journey into the tech era reflects a broader national goal of ensuring digital opportunities are accessible to all, positioning Barnsley as a model for towns across the UK to follow.
