A Real Buzz: UK Firm Helps Bees Make a Comeback

Holcim UK Leads the Way in Supporting Pollinators and Nature

Holcim UK has taken a proactive step to support biodiversity by backing a project designed to boost bee and pollinator populations across the UK. Working with the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust, the sustainable building solutions provider funded tens of thousands of spring-flowering bulbs to be planted by community groups throughout this nationally important landscape.

More than 60,000 bulbs, including Crocus, Bluebells and Grape Hyacinths, were purchased with a Holcim grant and distributed for planting last autumn. These flowers, chosen for their attractiveness to bees and other pollinators, are set to burst into colour this spring, helping to nourish essential insect populations after years of decline. Holcim also sent 1,000 bulbs to its own teams as part of a wider effort to create wildlife-friendly spaces at its more than 200 sites across the UK.

Tom Redfern, Head of Sustainability at Holcim UK, highlighted the importance of this work, noting that around a third of all food depends on pollination, and that UK wild bee numbers have dropped significantly over recent decades. By supporting this initiative, Holcim is helping communities enhance local habitats while reinforcing its nature-positive strategy.

Dr Jemma Batten of the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust echoed this optimism, expressing excitement to see the “Buzzing in the North Wessex Downs” campaign blossom in the months and years ahead.

Holcim’s contribution is a striking example of how industry and local groups can work together to foster greener, more biodiverse landscapes for the benefit of wildlife and people alike.

Holcim UK is one of Britain’s leading providers of sustainable building materials and construction solutions, supplying everything from cement and aggregates to low-carbon concrete while placing a growing focus on environmental restoration and biodiversity.
