Forest Fever: How Parkrun Became Britain’s Biggest Weekend Habit

Run Forest Run!

Forestry England is celebrating a remarkable achievement as runners and walkers mark 10,000 parkrun events held in forests across the country. Every Saturday, thousands of people come together for free, timed 5 km parkrun events beneath towering trees and along winding trails in some of England’s most beautiful woodlands.

The milestone reflects how parkrun has grown into a major national movement that brings communities together, encourages outdoor activity and invites people of all abilities to enjoy exercise in natural settings. From the rolling hills of Sherwood Pines to the challenging slopes of Whinlatter Forest, these woodland courses have become favourite weekend destinations for runners, joggers, walkers and volunteers alike.

Across Forestry England sites, more than 100,000 participants now call a forest parkrun their home event. Many visitors also travel from further afield to experience distinctive routes in stunning surroundings, making forest parkruns a reason to explore new areas as well as to get active.

Rachel Tallon, Forestry England’s Active Forests Programme Manager, says the events offer far more than fitness benefits. Running beneath the canopy boosts mood, reduces stress and creates a strong sense of community. The social aspect of parkrun is part of what keeps people returning week after week, whether they are striving for a personal best, enjoying a gentle walk with friends or volunteering to support others.

To celebrate this huge rise in participation, Forestry England has highlighted its top 10 forest parkrun routes, from south-coast pine trails to peaceful woodland loops in the Forest of Dean. All events remain free and open to everyone, beginners and seasoned runners alike.
