The UK has just clinched a major win for British industry, skills and innovation with a £1 billion helicopter contract that delivers results across the board. The Government has awarded a landmark contract to Leonardo UK to build 23 next-generation medium-lift military helicopters right here in Britain.
This deal secures around 3,300 jobs in Yeovil, Somerset, safeguarding specialist manufacturing roles that are the heart of Britain’s helicopter industry and the backbone of a wider UK supply chain. With nearly 70 UK companies involved, the project also protects defence skills and expertise that will continue to benefit local communities and the national economy for decades.
The contract isn’t just about British jobs. It positions the UK as a global leader in helicopter production and cutting-edge technologies like autonomous systems. Yeovil is now the centre of excellence for building these aircraft, which are designed to work alongside uncrewed aircraft on operations around the world — from defence missions to humanitarian relief efforts.
Export prospects are especially exciting. With around 20 countries seeking new medium-lift helicopters, British-built aircraft could unlock up to £15 billion in export opportunities over the next decade. That’s a huge boost for UK exports, helping to grow high-value manufacturing and open new markets for British industry.
Defence Secretary John Healey hailed the deal as a “major vote of confidence in British industry, British workers and British innovation,” and leaders across the sector say it strengthens both the nation’s armed forces and its economic future.
