Sun-Powered Tube: TfL Goes Green with New Solar Deal
Transport for London (TfL) has taken a significant step towards backing Britainās clean energy future after selecting SSE Energy Solutions to deliver purpose-built solar power directly to the London Underground network. Under the new partnership, renewable electricity will be generated at solar installations and fed straight into the Tubeās supply, bypassing the National Grid and supporting TfLās 2030 renewable energy goal.
Once up and running, these solar facilities could generate up to 65,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of zero-carbon electricity each year ā roughly the equivalent of two-thirds of the Victoria lineās annual energy needs or the electricity used by around 25,000 homes. This clean power not only cuts TfLās carbon emissions but also eases pressure on the broader electricity system and boosts local energy resilience.
The collaboration also locks in renewable energy at a fixed price, helping protect TfL from volatile energy markets and offering potential long-term cost savings. By generating power closer to where itās needed, the scheme supports greater energy security while stimulating investment in green jobs during construction and ongoing operation.
This solar initiative forms a key part of TfLās wider Energy Purchasing Strategy, which aims to source up to 70 per cent of its electricity through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), complemented by green tariffs for the remainder. Together these measures will help TfL meet its ambition of running on 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030, aligned with the Mayorās net zero carbon city goals.
TfL, already Londonās largest single electricity consumer, is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable urban transport, showing how major infrastructure can embrace clean-energy innovation at scale.
