British turbojet engine goes from concept to flight in under seven months

A new British turbojet engine has gone from concept to flight-ready status in less than seven months, demonstrating what can be achieved when defence specialists and industry work closely together.

The engine is part of a family developed by the Ministry of Defence and UK start-up Alloyed. Designed, built and tested entirely in Britain, the digitally manufactured engines are intended for uses ranging from small drones to larger aircraft.

A new domestic propulsion capability

Led by the MOD’s Strategic Capabilities Office, the programme combines government investment with matched funding from Alloyed. Its aim is to create a sovereign propulsion capability that can be designed, manufactured, tested and supported in the UK.

The engine family covers the 30N to 2000N thrust range, measuring the propulsion force each engine can produce. Two engines have already advanced into production: a 300N-class engine has completed flight testing and entered serial production, while a larger 1100N-class engine reached flight-ready status in under seven months.

The programme’s digital design and modelling system allows new propulsion systems and engine variants to be assessed and brought into production in months rather than years. Its modular approach is also intended to make future improvements easier to introduce without extensive redesign.

Skilled jobs and UK suppliers

More than 60 engineering and advanced manufacturing jobs have been created in Britain through the programme. A further 45 roles are expected over the next 12 months as production increases.

The work is also supporting a national supply chain involving more than 40 UK suppliers, most of them small and medium-sized businesses. That gives the project a wider industrial footprint beyond the companies directly developing the engines.

By reducing reliance on overseas supply chains, the programme is designed to help the UK respond more quickly to changing operational requirements. It also supports the wider aim of strengthening Britain’s defence industry and developing future export opportunities.

Designed to scale

Alloyed has brought its metals technology and advanced manufacturing expertise to the partnership, while the MOD has provided defence knowledge and investment. Together, the organisations have developed a family of engines rather than a single design, allowing the technology to serve a broader range of future systems.

The programme could also support allies looking for resilient, sovereign propulsion solutions, while giving the UK a stronger base for advanced digital manufacturing and defence capability development.
