Glasgow factory puts paper bottles into commercial production

A new factory near Glasgow is turning paper bottle technology from a pilot project into commercial production, with capacity for up to 40 million bottles a year.

Opened by UK-based packaging technology company Pulpex, the facility has created around 39 skilled manufacturing jobs. It was backed by investment from the UK’s National Wealth Fund and the Scottish National Investment Bank.

From prototypes to products

The Glasgow site uses sustainably sourced wood pulp to make bottles without hidden plastic layers. They are designed to be recyclable through standard household paper and card recycling, without specialist infrastructure.

More than 90% of the plant’s initial capacity for the current financial year has already been pre-sold. One early customer is Purely Scottish Natural Mineral Water, which is preparing what is expected to be the UK’s first natural mineral water in a paper bottle after 18 months of development work.

Pulpex plans to use the Glasgow operation as a model for its global “Manufacture Under Licence” network. The wider aim is to reach annual production of one billion units through licensing partnerships with regional packaging converters.

Why it matters for Britain

The project brings skilled manufacturing jobs and investment to the Glasgow region while giving brands a commercial route towards renewable packaging. Its planned use of existing paper and card recycling streams could also support adoption without requiring entirely new recycling infrastructure.
