UK Tech to the Rescue: How a London Startup is Fighting Disinformation at Scale

In a major vote of confidence for British technology, London-based AI company Refute has just raised £5 million in a seed funding round to accelerate its mission in combating the rapidly evolving threat of disinformation and hybrid warfare.

Led by deep-tech investor Amadeus Capital Partners, with participation from playfair, Episode 1, Osney Capital and the government-backed National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF), this funding highlights the UK’s growing strength in safeguarding democratic institutions and commercial entities from hostile online influence operations.

Founded by veterans with more than forty years of experience building world-leading data systems to fight terrorism and financial crime, Refute has developed a military-grade AI platform that detects early-stage signals of coordinated disinformation campaigns – often before they fully manifest. Its technology is already in use by commercial and government customers, tracking tens of thousands of inauthentic online posts and identifying widespread threats in high-risk sectors.

This milestone underscores Britain’s leadership in AI and cyber-resilience at a time when threat actors are increasingly using automated tools and synthetic content to shape public discourse and undermine trust. The new investment will help Refute scale its engineering team, enhance detection models, and expand across European markets – proving once again that UK innovation remains at the forefront of tackling some of the biggest challenges of our digital age.
