The UK Government has unveiled a major commitment to modernise rail services across Wales, promising both long-term improvements and significant local benefits. This wide-ranging plan is backed by nearly £500 million from the latest Spending Review and is projected to support around 12,000 jobs across the country, marking a generational step forward for Welsh transport infrastructure.
At its core is a partnership between the UK and Welsh Governments to endorse and deliver Transport for Wales’ long-term vision for rail. This shared strategy aims to improve reliability, connectivity and capacity across the network, building on recent investments including £1.1 billion to upgrade and electrify the Core Valley Lines and £800 million for a new fleet of trains.
A major highlight of the announcement is the commitment to build seven new railway stations in Wales. These will be located at:
- Magor and Undy
- Llanwern
- Cardiff East
- Newport West
- Somerton
- Cardiff Parkway
- Deeside Industrial Park
The new stations will bring clear, tangible benefits for communities and commuters. They will improve access to jobs, education and services by making it easier to travel to key urban centres such as Cardiff and Newport. The Cardiff Parkway station is expected to serve around 800,000 passengers a year, while supporting regeneration of the surrounding area and unlocking roughly 6,000 jobs.
Work on the new stations is scheduled to begin later this year, with Magor and Undy expected to be the first completed. All stations, along with additional infrastructure upgrades such as increased service frequencies and line improvements, will support sustainable transport, reduce congestion and boost economic growth across Wales.
Overall, this rail programme combines investment, jobs and infrastructure to deliver a stronger, better connected Wales now and for the future..
