Britain Turns Electronic Waste into Gold and Boosts Sustainability
The United Kingdom is making an exciting step forward in tackling electronic waste and building a more sustainable economy. The historic The Royal Mint has teamed up with Canadian clean-tech firm Excir to bring world-first technology to the UK that can recover gold and other precious metals from discarded electronic devices.
Turning E-Waste into a Valuable Resource
Every year, millions of tonnes of electronic waste such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets are thrown away around the world, and much of it is not recycled. The new technology introduced at The Royal Mint can extract more than 99 % of the gold contained in the circuit boards of these devices. Unlike traditional methods that need high heat, this innovative process works at room temperature, making it more energy-efficient.
Scientists and engineers are now working to scale this technology from the laboratory to a larger, industrial level at The Royal Mint’s site in South Wales. Initial tests have already produced extremely pure gold (999.9 quality), and future plans could also recover silver, palladium and copper.
Positive Benefits for the UK and the Planet
This project brings many positive outcomes for the UK:
• Protects natural resources – Recovering metals from old electronics reduces the need to extract new materials from the earth.
• Supports sustainability – Processing waste in a controlled UK facility cuts down on harmful emissions and reduces environmental impact.
• Creates new jobs and skills – The development and expansion of this technology will encourage innovation, research and employment in cutting-edge industries.
• Boosts the circular economy – By keeping materials in use for longer and finding new value in old products, Britain’s economy becomes more resilient and resource-efficient.
A Bright Future for Recycling and Innovation
This pioneering initiative shows how British ingenuity can turn a growing global problem into an opportunity for environmental and economic good. By transforming electronic waste into valuable metals right here in the UK, The Royal Mint and its partners are helping lead the world towards a greener, more circular way of using our limited resources.
