A brand-new, state-of-the-art gym has officially opened at Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore, marking a significant boost to the wellbeing and fitness of around 1,800 soldiers and their families.
The new £11.6 million Physical and Recreational Training Centre (P&RTC) is part of a long-term drive to modernise the UK’s defence infrastructure and support the health, morale and readiness of the Armed Forces. Fully completed under the Army Basing Programme and delivered by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation in partnership with specialist industry teams, the centre offers modern facilities that meet current needs and future demands.
Covering more than 2,400 m², the facility boasts a dedicated strength and conditioning suite, squash courts, a sprung-timber sports hall, and professional spaces for physical training instructors, alongside modern changing and shower areas. Solar panels and secure cycle storage reflect a commitment to sustainability and support greener travel for personnel on site.
Defence leaders say the gym is more than just a place to work out — it is a core part of ensuring personnel can thrive physically and mentally, helping them stay fit for operational duties while also enjoying a stronger sense of community. Investing in wellbeing facilities like this sends a clear message that the UK values the people who serve.
The centre will serve existing units based at Kendrew Barracks now, and will become even more important as new regiments and units relocate to the site in the coming years. This expansion highlights not only the strategic importance of the barracks but also Britain’s long-term commitment to providing first-class infrastructure for its Armed Forces.
With improved spaces for fitness, social interaction and healthy lifestyles, the new gym at Kendrew Barracks is a shining example of Britain investing in the wellbeing of its servicemen and women — and a welcome piece of good news for defence communities across the country.
