New NHS Scanners Target Fragile Bones and Slash Waiting Times

The UK Government and NHS England have confirmed funding for 20 new bone scanners across England to improve the diagnosis of osteoporosis and other conditions that weaken bones. These state-of-the-art machines, known as DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scanners, are the diagnostic gold standard for measuring bone density and assessing fracture risk.

The programme includes 14 replacement scanners to modernise older equipment and 6 additional machines to expand capacity. It builds on an earlier roll-out of 13 scanners, of which ten are already operational and contributing to faster diagnosis.

By increasing access to bone density scanning, tens of thousands of patients at risk of brittle bones will be able to receive tests sooner. Early diagnosis allows clinicians to start treatment earlier, tailor care more effectively and take steps to prevent painful, life-changing fractures. This is particularly beneficial for older people and women, who have a higher prevalence of osteoporosis.

Expanding scanner capacity also reduces waiting times for appointments, enabling more rapid assessment of bone health. Modern machines deliver higher quality images and can handle more scans, helping to relieve pressure on existing diagnostic services and cut delays in care.

Officials emphasise that earlier detection saves pain and disability, and can reduce demand on hospital services by preventing avoidable fractures. Patients can begin appropriate medication sooner and adopt lifestyle measures to improve bone strength, safeguarding independence and quality of life.

The investment supports wider NHS goals of modernising diagnostics, enhancing preventive care and shifting the emphasis from treating injury to preventing it.
