Food and drink sector powers ahead with £5.7bn boost to economy
Scotland’s food and drink manufacturing industry is going from strength to strength, with new figures showing a major boost to economic growth and jobs across the country.
A fresh report from the Food and Drink Federation reveals the sector grew by an impressive 20.2% in 2025, pushing its total contribution to £5.7 billion. This now makes it the largest manufacturing sector in Scotland, accounting for 32.4% of all manufacturing turnover.
The benefits go well beyond headline figures. The industry supports around 43,000 long-term jobs, representing over a quarter of all manufacturing employment in the country. These are skilled, stable roles that help underpin communities across Scotland.
This growth highlights the resilience and global appeal of British food and drink. From premium produce to world-renowned brands, the sector continues to showcase UK quality on both domestic shelves and international markets.
Importantly, the industry is also evolving. Continued investment in innovation, skills and new technology is helping businesses adapt, improve productivity and meet future demand. This positions the sector well for long-term growth and sustainability.
There’s also a wider economic ripple effect. A strong food and drink sector supports supply chains, boosts local economies and reinforces the UK’s reputation for high-quality produce worldwide.
Overall, the figures paint a clear picture: the food and drink industry is not just holding steady – it’s expanding rapidly, creating jobs and delivering billions to the economy. With the right support, it looks set to remain a cornerstone of UK manufacturing success for years to come.
