A British company is taking a major step towards reducing plastic waste by launching the UK’s first home compostable bread bags.
Modern Milkman has introduced the new packaging across its fresh bread range, replacing traditional plastic bread bags with a fully compostable alternative. Developed in partnership with Treetop Biopak, the bags are designed to break down naturally in around 12 months without leaving behind microplastics or harmful pollutants.
The waterproof single-layer material is designed to keep bread fresh while still being easy for households to dispose of. Customers can place the bags in food waste bins, home compost heaps or even reuse them as organic waste bin liners before they eventually break down.
The new bags are being rolled out across bread supplied by bakery partner Bread of Life as well as products from local bakeries across the country. Importantly, the switch is being made at no extra cost to customers.
With an estimated 11 to 12 million loaves of bread sold in the UK every day, replacing even a fraction of standard plastic bread bags could have a significant impact on cutting waste and reducing the amount of plastic sent to landfill or incineration.
The move also shows how British businesses are finding practical ways to make everyday products more sustainable, without making life harder or more expensive for consumers. If more retailers follow suit, compostable packaging could soon become a normal part of the weekly shop
