Bentley opens high-tech Crewe paint shop with nearly 100 colours and major emissions cuts

Bentley has started operations at a new 12,500-square-metre paint shop at its headquarters in Crewe, bringing more than 100 exterior colour options and a new finish called Spectraflair to its customers.

The facility is the latest stage in the transformation of Bentley’s Crewe site. It combines highly automated production with the hand-finished work carried out by the company’s skilled paint team, while also introducing measures designed to reduce waste, energy use and emissions.

A new home for bespoke Bentley finishes

The opening was marked by the completion of a one-of-one Continental GT S in the new Spectral Verdant finish. The car also features a hand-sprayed Union Flag racing stripe.

Bentley says the paint shop will offer an expanded choice of nearly 100 individual exterior colours. It has also been designed with dedicated space for bespoke paint processes, supporting newer options such as Ombré and satin finishes.

At its tallest point, the building is the highest structure at Bentley’s Crewe site. Production takes place across two floors, arranged to support both labour-intensive craftsmanship and automated paint application.

First to use automated guided vehicles

The facility is the first in the world to use Automated Guided Vehicles to move car bodies around the paint shop. Bentley plans for every model, including its first battery electric vehicle due to launch in late 2026, to be painted there by 2036.

The site also includes energy and thermal management systems. Cooler conditions are maintained on the ground floor for the paint team, while warmer air produced by the application systems is captured and redistributed around the building.

As a result, Bentley says the paint shop will not need heating for two-thirds of the year.

Less waste and cleaner air

A water-based paint primer has replaced the traditional solvent-based alternative. More accurate application, reduced use of masking materials and filtration monitoring are expected to cut overall waste materials by approximately 45 per cent compared with the previous facility.

Bentley also says volatile organic compound emissions from its paint operations will be reduced by up to 98 per cent. A Residual Thermal Oxidiser treats fumes from the paint process at 1,000°C before the air is released.

The building’s exterior features 45 sets of display panels, each painted by Bentley’s experts using the same techniques applied to the cars produced at the site.

Why this is good news for Britain

The Crewe facility strengthens high-value vehicle manufacturing in England while supporting skilled paint work and advanced automated production. Its energy systems, water-based primer and substantial reductions in waste and emissions also improve the environmental performance of a major local manufacturing site.
