Edinburgh Airport is to undergo a £500m expansion designed to handle more passengers and strengthen Scotland’s links with destinations around the world.
The five-year programme will add gates and aircraft stands, enlarge the check-in hall and departure lounge, and bring new food and retail areas to Scotland’s busiest airport.
A 60% bigger terminal
The plans will increase the terminal’s footprint by 60%. Airport bosses say the extra capacity will support new long-haul and short-haul routes, helping Edinburgh grow its international connectivity.
The investment will also extend beyond the terminal itself. Improvements across the airport campus will include additional electric vehicle infrastructure and a new access road.
The first stage is the South East Pier expansion, which is due to open in summer 2027. First Minister John Swinney visited the project and said it would improve the experience for passengers while supporting Scotland’s international connections and wider economic growth.
Scotland’s busiest airport
Edinburgh Airport served about 17 million passengers in 2025. It is currently connected to more than 160 destinations through 39 airlines, including major hubs in the UK, Europe, the United States, and the Middle and Far East.
Chief executive Gordon Dewar described the programme as the biggest investment in the airport’s history. He said the work would provide the capacity and facilities needed for the airport’s future.
Edinburgh Airport is jointly owned by Vinci Airports, which holds a 50.01% stake, and Global Infrastructure Partners, which holds the remaining 49.99%. Vinci operates more than 70 airports across 14 countries, while Global Infrastructure Partners, part of BlackRock, invests in energy, transport and digital infrastructure.
Building for future demand
The expansion comes as the airport continues to serve a broad mix of domestic, European and long-distance destinations. More stands, gates and passenger space should give airlines greater room to operate as the airport develops its route network.
The announcement was made on the same day as a separate technical issue at Nats’ Prestwick centre caused delays at Edinburgh and other UK airports. Engineers fixed that problem, which was not connected to an earlier software defect that led to the cancellation of 2,000 flights across the UK.

The investment will improve passenger facilities at a major UK transport hub and create room for more routes linking Scotland with international markets. The new access road and electric vehicle infrastructure also form part of a wider upgrade across the airport campus.
