Work has begun on a new railway station in Golborne, reconnecting the Greater Manchester town to the rail network for the first time in 60 years.
Due to open in spring 2028, Golborne station will be the first new train station built in Greater Manchester for more than 25 years. The project is being delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Wigan Council, using locally devolved government funding.
A more joined-up local transport network
The station will include step-free access, lifts to both platforms, a footbridge, digital information screens, seating, shelters, ticket machines, CCTV, lighting and passenger assistance intercoms. The nearby town-centre car park will also be resurfaced and upgraded.
Golborne has already gained a new Bee Network bus service. The 612 began running earlier this month, offering half-hourly daily journeys between Wigan and St Helens through Abram, Golborne and Newton-le-Willows.
Golborne-based engineering firm Murphy has been appointed to build the station. The project team says it will work with residents and businesses during construction to keep them informed and reduce disruption.
Why it matters for Britain
The station will give Golborne residents a new rail connection to the wider Greater Manchester area, alongside improved bus links. It also brings major infrastructure work to a local engineering company based in the town.
