A major new £350 million factory has officially opened in the Scottish Highlands, bringing hundreds of jobs and helping Britain harness more of its own renewable energy.
Japanese engineering giant Sumitomo Electric has opened the UK's first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable manufacturing facility at the Port of Nigg, near Inverness.
The investment represents a major vote of confidence in British manufacturing and Scotland's growing renewable energy industry.
Powering Britain's Energy Future
The new factory will manufacture specialist electricity cables designed to carry large amounts of power over long distances, including beneath the sea.
These cables are essential for connecting offshore wind farms to Britain's electricity network, helping deliver renewable energy to homes and businesses across the country.
The facility will also support major infrastructure projects, including the proposed Shetland 2 electricity connection, which aims to bring renewable power from the islands to mainland Scotland.
Hundreds of Jobs for the Highlands
The £350 million investment is expected to support hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, creating opportunities for skilled workers and businesses throughout the Highlands.
The Scottish Government has also contributed £24.5 million towards the development, helping establish the region as an important centre for clean energy manufacturing.
Sumitomo Electric brings more than a century of subsea cable expertise to the project, strengthening Britain's ability to manufacture vital energy infrastructure domestically rather than relying entirely on overseas production.
Why It Matters for Britain
This is more than a new factory. It's an investment in British jobs, advanced manufacturing and long-term energy security.
By producing essential power cables here in the UK, Britain can strengthen its supply chains, support its offshore wind industry and make better use of homegrown renewable electricity.
A £350 million investment, hundreds of jobs and a British manufacturing first. That's something worth celebrating!
