Wirral buses get faster and more reliable after public control switch

Wirral’s bus network has made a strong start after returning to public control for the first time in 40 years.

In the first 10 days, reliability rose by 10% and punctuality by 15%. Across the publicly controlled network covering Wirral and St Helens, reliability is now 92% and punctuality stands at 80%, with more than a million passenger journeys recorded.

More frequent services and newer buses

Passengers have welcomed changes including later and longer-running timetables, as well as new links to Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals. On the Beechwood Estate, a Sunday service has increased from every two hours to hourly.

The new UK-built fleet features low-emission buses with USB charging points, audio-visual announcements, more comfortable seating and additional space for wheelchairs and prams.

Fares include the £2 adult cap and MyTicket, which provides young people with all-day bus travel across the Liverpool City Region. The changes are intended to make services more reliable, affordable and accessible for local communities.

Public control has already been introduced in St Helens, with preparations underway to extend it to Knowsley, Liverpool and Sefton by 2027.

Why it matters for Britain

For Wirral residents, better bus links can make it easier to reach hospitals, work, education and local businesses. More accessible buses and capped fares also support people who do not drive, while the low-emission fleet helps modernise everyday transport.
