British Steel opens 40-plus apprenticeship and graduate roles for 2027

British Steel has opened applications for more than 40 apprenticeships and graduate roles starting in September 2027, creating new routes into engineering and steelmaking careers.

The opportunities are available at the company’s sites in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove. They follow the arrival of 70 new apprentices across British Steel’s sites in September 2026, as well as the return of its graduate recruitment programme.

Earn while you learn

Apprentices will combine practical experience with fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications. After specialist training, they will move into operational roles and work alongside experienced colleagues while developing skills used in steelmaking.

British Steel is also seeking graduates for several positions, with further roles in other business areas expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Sixteen graduates joined the company in September, the first intake since 2022.

Applicants for apprenticeships need at least three GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English and Science. The company says it aims to offer permanent employment to apprentices who successfully complete the programme.

Applications close on 26 February 2027 for graduate roles and 8 March 2027 for apprenticeships.

Why it matters for Britain

The intake gives people in steelmaking communities a practical way into skilled work, with training, qualifications and experience at a major UK manufacturer. It also helps British Steel develop the workforce needed for its long-term operations.
