Lucie Conquers Whitby’s 199 Steps in Powerful Charity Challenge

A young woman who suffered life-changing injuries five years ago has completed a challenging charity climb up Whitby’s famous 199 steps. Lucie Maguire, now 24, marked the anniversary of her accident by ascending the Grade-I listed steps in Whitby, North Yorkshire, in an event she named “From trauma to triumph: Lucie’s hop to the top.”

When she was 19, Lucie was struck by a tractor and dragged beneath its trailer, sustaining catastrophic injuries including the amputation of her right leg and pelvis, a broken back, and extensive internal damage. She spent more than 500 days in hospital and has undergone years of specialist rehabilitation.

The climb on 27 January 2026 was the first time Lucie travelled a substantial distance without the use of a wheelchair since her accident. She completed the ascent on one leg with support from her physiotherapist and others who have supported her recovery.

Lucie chose the challenge to raise funds and awareness for Day One Trauma Support, a charity that provides emotional, practical and financial help to people affected by major trauma, and which supported her and her family during her recovery.

Her physiotherapist described the physical demands of the climb as immense, noting she has only half the strength of someone with two legs and must rely heavily on her upper body.

Family, friends and supporters gathered to cheer Lucie on as she reached the top of the steps. Her fundraiser has attracted donations and social media interest, with many inspiring others with her determination and resilience.
