Marvel-powered space lessons roll out to schools across the UK

A new classroom resource using Marvel characters to explore space science is being rolled out to schools across the UK.

Astro Assemble has been developed by the Royal Observatory Greenwich with Disney and 1UP Studios. The free resource is aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils, with interactive, team-based challenges inspired by Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Thor.

Rather than simply presenting facts about space, the lessons ask students to work together and solve problems. They are designed to build collaboration, critical thinking and confidence, while making science more accessible to pupils who may find it difficult to connect with the subject.

Tested with teachers and pupils

The programme was co-designed with teachers and piloted earlier this year with 350 students across eight schools. The results were encouraging, with 90% of teachers saying they would use the Marvel Universe to teach space science again.

Astro Assemble is available free through the Royal Museums Greenwich website, making it accessible to schools without the need for extra-cost equipment or resources. Its activities are aligned with national curriculum goals and focus on space science alongside wider STEM skills.

The nationwide launch gives more classrooms the chance to use an imaginative approach to topics including astronomy, while drawing on the Royal Observatory’s long-standing role in public science education.

Why it matters for Britain

The resource gives schools a free way to support science learning, teamwork and problem-solving. It also extends the educational reach of Royal Observatory Greenwich beyond its site, helping more young people engage with astronomy and STEM subjects.
