£40m robotics network aims to speed surgery recovery and boost harvests

A new £40 million network of Robotics Adoption Hubs is being rolled out across the UK, with the aim of turning promising machines into practical tools for businesses and public services.

The hubs will offer impartial advice, hands-on demonstrations and help connecting organisations with technology suppliers, finance providers and specialist support. They will operate in places including Newcastle, the South West, Milton Keynes and South Wales.

From operating theatres to fields and roads

Among the technologies being explored are robotic surgical assistants, which could make some procedures less invasive and help patients recover more quickly. Automated fruit-picking machines could also shorten harvests, freeing agricultural workers to concentrate on other jobs and increasing the amount of produce moving from fields to shops.

Other projects will examine automation for waste and recycling in the South East, while work in Milton Keynes will support service robots, drones and driverless vehicles for transport, logistics and deliveries.

The programme also includes £1.7 million for AURA, a body led by The Welding Institute with Anglia Ruskin University to coordinate the hubs and share knowledge. A further £2.5 million will support 12 projects focused on robotics training, apprenticeships, continuing professional development and workforce outreach.

Why it matters for Britain

The hubs give organisations a clearer route into robotics, helping address skills and adoption barriers. The stated aim is to improve productivity and public services while supporting skilled jobs, investment and growth in communities across the UK.
