Bristol-made braille device opens new route into STEM

A new device made in Bristol could make it easier for people with sight loss to study and work in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Canute Scientific, created by not-for-profit Bristol Braille, uses rows of moving dots to display complex scientific and mathematical information in braille. It looks similar to a computer keyboard, with the dots rising through slots so users can read several lines at once.

That sets it apart from single-line braille displays, which can make it harder to move through notes and data. The device can also show text files and information from custom applications, mirroring what appears on a visual screen.

Hollie Baker, a blind associate lecturer in computer science and creative computing at Bath Spa University, said the technology could help her access teaching notes more smoothly while lecturing. She has previously relied on a single line of braille or synthetic speech.

Bristol Braille develops the machines with braille users and builds them locally, allowing customers to speak directly to the people involved if problems arise. About two million people in the UK live with sight loss, including around 340,000 who are registered blind or partially sighted.

Why it matters for Britain

The device could help remove practical barriers for people with sight loss entering STEM education and careers. Its development also supports specialist technology work in Bristol, with users involved in shaping a product designed for real-world study and teaching.
