A new breast care unit at Stafford County Hospital is now fully open, bringing diagnosis, treatment and support services together in one place.
The two-storey centre began welcoming patients in April and replaces an older unit that the University Hospitals of North Midlands said could no longer meet the demands of modern breast care. Staff, patients and supporters are due to attend an official opening ceremony.
More services at County Hospital
The facility includes four consultation rooms, an enhanced treatment room, three counselling rooms, two mammography rooms and two ultrasound rooms.
The NHS trust said the layout should make care more joined-up, with patients spending less time moving between different parts of the hospital. More tests can also be carried out at County Hospital, reducing the need for some people to travel to Royal Stoke University Hospital.
The trust described the centre as a modern and welcoming environment designed to support patients from diagnosis through to treatment. It also said the unit had already made a difference to patients and staff since opening.
Why it matters for Britain
For people in Stafford and the surrounding area, the unit means more breast care services are available locally. That could reduce journeys to Royal Stoke and make appointments easier to navigate, while giving NHS staff more space and facilities to deliver care.
