Bradford’s new station set to bring direct Leeds–Manchester trains

Bradford is set to get a new railway station designed to provide direct trains between Leeds and Manchester, as part of the Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme.

The station will be built at the current Bradford Interchange site, with faster and more frequent services intended to make travelling across the north simpler. The Department for Transport says passengers could eventually have a “turn-up-and-go” railway, with trains frequent enough that checking a timetable would not always be necessary.

Construction is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s. The project will sit alongside Bradford’s Southern Gateway regeneration plans and is intended to connect with the proposed West Yorkshire mass transit network, including a tram link to Leeds.

Bradford Council estimates that the new station and the proposed mass transit network could bring more than £1bn in economic benefits. The council and regional leaders also expect improved connections to support new homes and jobs in the city.

Why it matters for Britain

The station would give Bradford more direct links with two major northern cities, while making it easier for people to travel for work and leisure. It also forms part of a wider effort to improve rail connections across Yorkshire and support regeneration in the city.
