Boots wins approval for high-tech Nottingham warehouse upgrade

Boots has secured planning permission for a multi-million-pound upgrade at its Nottingham headquarters, with the company saying the investment will help protect jobs at its sprawling Nottinghamshire campus.

The project will extend and modernise the D105 warehouse off Harrimans Lane. It will allow Boots to install robots and specialist mechanical equipment for storing and moving temperature-sensitive medicines.

Boots employs around 6,000 people at its headquarters between Nottingham and Beeston. The company said the changes were needed to keep its medical products compliant with regulations and support continued investment in the site.

Keeping medicines moving

The upgraded warehouse will continue supplying medicines to the NHS, community pharmacies, Boots shops and online customers across the UK. The plans are intended to secure existing roles rather than create additional jobs, and will not alter shift patterns or add extra traffic to city roads.

Some grassland, trees and a small car park and HGV storage area will be lost during construction. Planning permission requires Boots to replace the grassland and make longer-term ecological improvements within its Thane Road complex.

Nottingham City Council approved the scheme on September 30, saying it would support the wider economic development of the Boots campus. Historic Grade-I listed buildings elsewhere on the site will not be affected.

Why it matters for Britain

The investment helps maintain a major Nottinghamshire employment base while supporting the reliable distribution of medicines to NHS services, pharmacies and customers around the country. It also brings more automation into a key UK healthcare supply operation.
