Britain to Lead World-First Mission to Clean Up Space Junk

Britain is preparing to tackle one of space exploration's biggest challenges - clearing up the growing mountain of junk orbiting Earth.

The UK Space Agency has awarded a Β£61 million contract to ClearSpace UK to develop a pioneering spacecraft capable of capturing and removing two defunct British satellites from orbit.

The ambitious mission, scheduled to launch in 2029, will use advanced robotics and autonomous navigation technology to approach and capture satellites travelling at thousands of miles per hour.

Once captured, the redundant satellites will be guided back towards Earth's atmosphere, where they will safely burn up.

It's a world-first national mission designed to demonstrate the removal of multiple satellites using a single spacecraft.

British Expertise at the Forefront

The project will be led from the UK, bringing together engineers, scientists and technology specialists from across Britain.

ClearSpace UK expects the programme to create highly skilled opportunities in robotics, spacecraft engineering, navigation and mission operations.

The technology could also pave the way for an entirely new industry, with spacecraft eventually able to repair, refuel and maintain satellites rather than simply abandon them.

Why It Matters for Britain

Space debris is an increasing threat to the satellites supporting everything from GPS navigation and weather forecasting to communications and national security.

By investing in technology to tackle the problem, Britain is positioning itself at the forefront of a potentially valuable new global industry.

With the UK space sector already worth Β£18.6 billion and supporting more than 55,000 jobs, the mission offers opportunities for British innovation, specialist employment and future exports.

Britain isn't just reaching for the stars - it's helping to keep them clear.
