A railway station built to support growth on the northern edge of Chelmsford has welcomed more than 800,000 journeys in its first 12 months.
Beaulieu Park opened on October 26, 2025, on the Great Eastern Main Line. Its first-year forecasts ranged from 290,000 to 390,000 journeys, meaning actual use has more than doubled the highest estimate.
A station built alongside new homes
The station was designed to ease pressure on Chelmsford’s central station and provide better access for a growing local community. It is supporting a development that is expected to include 10,000 new homes on the northern side of the city.
The project received £141 million from the Government’s Housing and Infrastructure Fund, alongside £34 million from local partners. That included £12 million from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and £22 million in developer contributions from Countryside, part of Vistry Group, and L&Q.
Greater Anglia said the passenger figures showed the station had been embraced by people in and around Chelmsford. The strong opening-year performance also follows the operator’s announcement that Cambridge South was on course for 1.6 million journeys in its first year.
Why it matters for Britain
Beaulieu Park shows how transport investment can keep pace with housing growth. Its early passenger numbers suggest the new rail connection is already giving residents a practical alternative to travelling through Chelmsford’s busier central station.
