Getting a phone signal on the Tube is becoming less of a lottery. Transport for London says 70 per cent of its Underground stations located below ground now have mobile coverage.
The rollout involves all four major UK network operators: Three UK, EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media O2. Boldyn Networks is delivering the work for TfL at no cost under a concession agreement.
More lines and stations connected
Recent additions include coverage across sections of the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern, District, Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines. Signals are now available at stations including Walthamstow Central, Blackhorse Road, Highbury & Islington, Sloane Square, Moorgate, Aldgate East and Fulham Broadway.
Continuous coverage has also been added along parts of the Northern line, including between East Finchley and Waterloo on the Charing Cross branch, and between Borough and Morden, aside from Elephant & Castle station.
TfL says work remains on track to cover the whole Underground network by the end of the year. The authority and Boldyn are also working on mobile coverage for underground sections of the Docklands Light Railway and the Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and New Cross.
Why it matters for Britain
More reliable mobile access should make journeys across London easier for passengers who need to stay in touch or access information underground. The rollout also supports better connectivity on parts of the capitalβs wider public transport network.
