AbbVie opens expanded Oxford research hub in £120m UK investment

Pharmaceutical company AbbVie has expanded its research and development base in Oxford as part of an investment of more than £120 million in the UK.

The new 12,000-square-foot site, known as AbbVie Oxford, will widen the company’s research work across immunology, neuroscience and oncology. Scientists will focus on identifying new disease targets and combination treatments in areas where patients still have significant unmet needs.

Building on Oxford’s biotech expertise

The facility builds on capabilities AbbVie gained through its 2022 acquisition of Oxford-based biotechnology company DJS Antibodies.

AbbVie also works with more than 100 UK universities and research organisations each year, and is expanding its academic collaborations, including with the University of Oxford. One Oxford collaboration is examining how people with certain inflammatory diseases respond to treatments over time, with the aim of helping guide future drug development.

The company employs more than 1,100 people across its UK operations in Oxford, Maidenhead and Marlow. The expanded Oxford site adds to the country’s role in AbbVie’s research network and brings several areas of medical science together in one location.

Why it matters for Britain

The investment strengthens pharmaceutical research in Oxford and supports collaboration between industry and British universities. It also builds on a UK workforce of more than 1,100 AbbVie employees, with research aimed at developing treatments for serious illnesses.
